Friday Flashback

Hubby and I found this new retro dry goods store in our little town . . . we LOVE it! Its got an antique candy area where you can buy one Bit O Honey for 1 penny, actual big metal Slinkies that will actually walk down stairs, metal lunch boxes without a zipper or cold pouch in sight, real live wooden Tinker Toys, 4 different “brands” of candy cigarettes, and this . . .

Oh yes, this yummy goodness is available for purchase in a single bottle, 6 pack, 12 pack, or by the case. OR, if you’re really feeling nostalgic, you can mix it with any of a number of other awesomely fun old-tyme flavors such as these:

I have yet to find the old top open bottle cooler like the one I used to get bottles out of at the Barber Shop with my Dad on Saturday mornings, but the soda tastes so yummy no matter where I may have bought it :-)

What’s your favorite nostalgic soda?

This Just Wasn’t Me

Therefore, I totally don’t get it . . . but I do get that my little Princess is, well, a princess :-) She likes girly stuff . . . pink stuff . . . glitter and unicorns (just like the Progressive lady!). She is a princess, but not prissy (thankfully!).

So I come home one night last week . . . Hubby says “Go look at your daughter.” I see this . . .

Yes – Princess is sleeping with a fleece headband warmer thingy over her eyes. The next morning . . .

Me: Good Morning Princess! Um, why were you sleeping with that fleece headband over your eyes?
Princess: Because it’s too bright in my room and I can’t sleep, so I wanted it dark.
Me: Um – how about you turn off the nightlight and don’t turn your overhead light on full blast when you wake up in the middle of the night?
P: Because then I’ll be scared if it’s dark in my room.
Me: But you’re not scared when you wear a cover over your eyes to make it dark?
P: Nope. Because it’s light in my room, just not in my eyes.

Ah yes – makes perfect sense! WTF???!!!???

She proceded to spend the week asking if she could get one of those sleeping eye cover things . . . I kept saying she didn’t need one. She kept asking for one. I kept asking which of her friends has one that she thinks she needs one, too. She kept saying “None. I saw it on TV.”

Curse you Miley Montana Hannah Cyrus!

So the week goes on . . . she gives up asking. We end up shopping after a baseball game. Dude thinks he needs new shirts for summer (“because I’ve only got 5 dark blue or black ones and clearly that’s not enough even though I have a drawer full of other colored shirts that I won’t wear but won’t give up because I like them but I just don’t want to wear them with my camo shorts” – what – pause for dramatic effect – EVER!). Anyhoo – we’re at the mall and lo and behold right next to Old Navy is Princess’s mothership- Claire’s – oh so wonderful and full of earrings and glittery pink things!

Dude shops at Old Navy for appropriately black shirts with aliens and other boy things on them while Princess and I head to Claire’s to use the gift card she has from when she had to return the flip flops Grandma bought her. She’s on a mission – on a mission for one of these (which a friend did indeed have on the bus) . . .

Yes people, that is a brush that you push up and pop out so you can brush your hair and look in the mirror – just not at the same time! Of course Princess chose a heart-shaped pink/purple/blue glittery one. But wait – she still has MONEY left on that wonderful little gift card! Hmmm . . . maybe she can find a cute pair of earrings or a headband, because clearly 20 pair of earrings and a bazillion headbands are not enough for one 7 year old Princess!

She’s wandering and wandering while Dude is waving frantically from across the mall hallway because darn it he’s found stuff and wants me to come buy it NOOOOWWWW!!! I give Princess the word – it’s time to go. Find something or leave with just that awesome oh so cool gotta have it freaky brush and mirror thing.

She decides to come back some other time when she can really look at all the stuff and make a good choice. I’m wondering, are there any good choices at Claire’s?

We’re almost out the door – I AM out the door . . . then I hear my little Princess “Oh Mommy! Wait! Come Back! I found IT right HERE!” Oh yes, she found IT . . .

Pink, glittery AND with kittens on it . . . what more could a Princess ask for.

Thanks, Grandma!

Jodie’s Week for $400 Alex

“Soccer balls, baseballs, tennis balls, paint rollers, and attitudes.”

What are “Things that Roll?”

For the past week I’ve been playing with things that roll, and since my keyboard doesn’t roll, well, I’ve quite ignored it.

Dude had 3 baseball games scheduled this week – three! I LOVE baseball and could watch it every day, even if it is goofy 9 year old kid-pitch walk and strike out marathon games; however, Princess is getting a little “over” all this baseball stuff. And rightfully so . . . at least she’s a good sport about it. There are other girls to play with at the games, and the locally-owned ice cream shop is right across the street from the ball field – we all know what that means! Not only did Dude play in his 3 scheduled games this week, he subbed for another team on Friday! They were short players, and since Dude is part of the player pool, he got to play another game. When I asked Hubby if we should say yes, he said “of course – Dude will love it!” Than about an hour later he said “Did we REALLY just agree to spend another 3 hours watching baseball this week?” Yup – we sure did! Amazingly enough, we went to watch some boys play in the dirt and a baseball game broke out! Doesn’t this look like fun?

I love how it looks like he’s getting hit in the head with the ball. Not so much – the ball was on its way to the pitcher, who ended up dropping it, and it rolled (hee hee) away from home plate – Dude was safe!

Then there was the matter of Duma . . . poor thing has been a bit neglected lately because of the crappy weather, but with the wonderful weather this week, and the extra time I’ve found since Daisy Scouts and a work contract are over for the year, I got back into my morning runs. Duma is a happy camper now that we get up in the morning and head out for our run, with the Chuck It in hand, which means that she gets to chase a rolling tennis ball while I huff and puff my way up and down the hills to get a mile in. It sure does feel good to be doing that again!

Princess had her last week of soccer this week – a makeup week from the week that got snowed out. Finally a beautiful day to watch soccer – no rain, blankets, or winter coats in sight! WOO HOO! It was quite windy, though . . . windy enough that the girls didn’t even have to kick the ball and it would roll all the way down the field.

They only had 7 girls there, which meant they had to play a lot! With 5 girls on the field at a time, Princess only got to sit out twice the whole game. She made the most of that time by rolling around on the turf.

The girls had a great time playing and were very excited to get their medals. This has absolutely nothing to do with rolling, but it’s my blog and I can do whatever I want :-)

Now Princess has two weeks of “nothing” before YMCA baseball starts . . . which I personally can’t wait for! I may or may not have volunteered to coach her team . . . WTH was I thinking!

I also “got” to do work on Thursday and Friday at the office, which normally isn’t on my schedule . . . but I figured why not, a little extra money won’t hurt . . . and the tires on my car do indeed roll, so it fit with my theme for the week :-)

And then there was this little project of a mini bathroom remodel. I was just going to paint – that fun bright yellow color I’ve always wanted. And I did! It went from dull yellow to bright sunshiny yellow. I’ve been rolling yellow paint on my walls and ceiling for DAYS! Notice how the previous owners were too lazy to remove 4 friggin’ screws to take down a rectangular mirror when they painted. . .

Also note the wonderfully 1979ish lights . . . they don’t look as awful in this photo as they actually were – old tarnished brass . . . bluck!

As for the mirror that was there, I hadn’t planned on replacing it, but on a really windy day, the basement door slammed when Dude and his friends went outside – since the mirror wasn’t attached because I was painting, it fell off the counter and shattered – so $60 later I got a new, but the same, mirror. I also decided to replace the lights. I would love a row of lights above the mirrow, but this is a mini redo and I didn’t want to have to rewire anything, so I got some clearance lights from Lowes . . . nothing fancy, but definitely better than the others!

I decided that I really wanted a new shower curtain to replace the nasty white frilly one I got on clearance 3 years ago when I thought I’d be doing this little remodel way back then. Princess and I picked out this fun one at Target :-)

I also replaced the old hooks with some new silver rolling ones that don’t get caught up on the rod all the time – yay! Also note the sunshine yellow basket I got for 40% off at Michaels. I don’t have a linen closet, so it works perfect for me to roll up the towels my Mom gave me for Christmas. I also replaced the big fat white hook on the wall with some smaller ones – I have these in our guest bathroom and everyone loves ’em, so I got them for my bathroom. I already like this simple little hook better than the other ones!

Since the rest of my bathroom was looking so much brighter with the yellow paint and the white accents, I decided the nasty wooden medicine cabinet that I had just wouldn’t cut it. So the kiddos and I went shopping for something different. I wasn’t finding anything anywhere. Then at Bed Bath and Beyond, just as we were about to leave the bathroom area, Dude spotted this on the bottom shelf behind something else . . . it’s exactly what I wanted! Yay! So I got a new white medicine cabinet that doesn’t look so blah. I’m way happy with it :-)

It looks a little goofy and crooked in teh picture – it’s actually not like that in real life – weird!

I of course had to hang my awesome Mother’s Day gift on it. The cool thing is that both of the white gold/diamond/sapphire necklaces were Mother’s Day gifts, and the yellow gold/diamond heart necklace was a gift from my Mother – so it’s perfect that they are all there together :-)

Finally was the wall behind me – the one I see when I look in the mirror. If you recall from previous posts, that was my tester wall. Turns out, testing with dark blue paint sucks – especially when you make the mistake of not priming that wall before painting a bright yellow on it! UGH! 2 coats of paint and it still looked like dark blue – no coverage at all, while the rest of the bathroom looked pretty good. So I got some primer and primed that wall. A 3rd coat on the entire bathroom completed the entire bathroom except for that wall. I’ve done 2 coats over the primer, and it’s almost there. One more and I’ll probably call it done. I’m going to FINALLY get to hang the bumble bee and sunflower picture QT gave me in 2004 (embarrassed me here!) . . . I was waiting until I painted the wall . . . little did I know. But now it will be up there . . . covering the probably not quite covered blue spot on the wall . . . and I’ll get to see fun bumble bees and sunflowers in the mirror every day when I dry my hair. YAY!

And my last rolling thing for the week – I finally found the semi-waterproof/fleece picnic blanket I’ve been looking for at Target . . . it’s AWESOME that it rolls up and has an awesome carrying handle – yay!

So I’ve spent the last week watching soccer balls roll, watching baseballs roll, watching tennis balls roll, driving my car while the tires rolled, letting my attitude roll with the punches, and using a roller to paint my bathroom a bazillion more times than I’d ever planned. YAY for a fun rolling week!

How about you? What did you roll with last week?

Daily Medals

I painted my bathroom yesterday – at least the first coat. It will need at least 2, if not 3. As I was painting, I was thinking how awesome some people are! Actually, I don’t know if these people are actually awesome, but their products are :-)

The Gold Medal goes to the guy who invented the paint roller. How much would it suck to have to paint an entire room with a brush? Doing the trim just about killed me!

The Silver Medal goes to the guy who invented the telescoping handle and decided to put it on a paint roller. So awesome to not have to use the ladder to paint any of my bathroom, including the ceiling!

And the Bronze Medal goes to the guy that invented this:

The Chuck It. No, it has nothing to do with painting my bathroom, but after I painted my bathroom, I took Duma for a walk and was thinking how awesome it was to be able to throw the ball a bazillion yards for her without throwing my shoulder out or having to touch the nasty icky slobbery ball each time she brought it back.

Did you award any medals yesterday?

Mother’s Day 2010

I’m so lucky! My family really does shower me with love and do whatever I want to do on Mother’s Day – well, I get showered with their love every day, but the extra gifts on Mother’s Day make it extra fun 😉

My grand plan of sleeping in as long as I wanted went of without a hitch – I didn’t wake up until 6:45 a.m. So much for sleeping in – but it wasn’t a kid, animal, or alarm clock that woke me up, so I was happy as a clam. I snuck downstairs quietly so as not to wake the sleeping giants and watched a movie all by myself. Good start – good start.

Princess finally woke up and came down to snuggle. Dude actually had slept over at a friend’s house and wasn’t due home until 9:00 – so we had a good amount of alone snuggle time. Really good start!

I had grand plans to go out for a yummy breakfast at Rosie’s Diner so I could have my favorite Denver Omelette and crispy hashbrowns, but when Princess and Hubby asked what I wanted, I requested and received this:

A long john with chocolate frosting and a grande mocha, extra hot. So off they went to the grocery store for the donut! I figured they get the mocha there at the little coffe shop inside, but instead, they were gone for almost 40 minutes . . . apparently the Starbucks drive-thru was really busy. When they got back, I asked why they went all the way to Starbucks . . . the response – “I wanted it to be extra special.” Awwwwwww!

Princess also came home with these for me . . .

A bouquet of “Crazy Daisies” – not this exact bouquet, but my picture didn’t turn out as well 😉 As soon as Dude got home, I got to open stuff – YAY!

For the past two weeks, Princess had been talking about going up to the high school with her Buddy. She talked about routers and belt sanders and lasers and all kinds of stuff. The Wednesday before Mother’s Day, she came home absolutely CRUSHED! She insisted she couldn’t tell me why, but later on she let it slip – she and her Buddy had accidentally cut my Mother’s Day gift in half with the router and she didn’t think they could make another one in time. BUT, her teacher and the shop teacher found a time for Princess and her Buddy to do it all over. This is what I got:

A special heart to hold my necklaces. Awwwwwwww!!! I’m a lucky lucky person!

Next I got open Dude’s gift. I love it and it made me laugh my ass off:

Anything I want!!! But apprently he would like me to be good about what I choose 😉

Next was a gift from Hubby. I was completely surprised that there was an actual gift in a box because for a gift I’d asked him to arrange for the plumber to fix the water faucet outside because I’ve hated it for the past 7 years. But there was a box, and this is what was in it:

A new camera! My other one had been to hell and back – I was so excited to get this! He even got me the “kit” version that included the 2 gig SD card and this carrying case:

Yes . . . the camera and case are actually PINK! He said he chose it because it wasn’t “me” and thought it was fun, but I could exchange it for the silver, black, blue, green, or red one. I kept the pink one – it certainly isn’t “me” which is what makes it so fun – he does know me well! So now I can officially say I have something pink in my purse.

After all this fun, I decided what I wanted to do for the day – go hiking at one of our favorite places. I had a few places in mind, but most of them were too high in altitude and would’ve been too snowy and icy, so I chose something closer to home. We loaded a couple geocaches into the GPS, packed some lunches, loaded up the dog and kids, and headed out for our hike. Since we were going to a state park, there weren’t any actual geocaches in the park, so we loaded ones that were near the park, but easy to find. We found the first one easily just outside the gates to a private working cattle ranch:

1 for 1!

On to Castlewood Canyon for a fun family hike!

We love this park! It’s a great family hike with tons of boulders for the kids to play on and water for the dog to play in. We got there early enough that it wasn’t busy at all. Hubby hadn’t been to the dam ruins before, so we hiked back there:

I got to tell the kids a bunch of times “No you can’t climb up on the dam. I don’t care if those people did, you’re not doing it! They’re breaking the rules. We don’t break the rules when we’re hiking. No, you cannot climb up onto the dam.” So they just stared at it longingly:

We found a great boulder with some shade to eat lunch on. Don’t let the fact that Princess is standing in the water fool you – it was COLD! But, she’ll take any opportunity she can get to take off her shoes and socks and wade in water:

We hiked the long way out of the canyon and found this cool boulder on the way. The kiddos were simply using it for shade, but notice the cool hole in it . . . the boulder obviously used to be sitting the other way. It had rolled downhill and landed upside down – you can tell by the gouge that was left from water pooling in it:

We were amazed on our way out of the park . . . it was FULL! There was a lignup of cars at least 11 deep waiting to get into the park. The Ranger would only let one car in for each car that left. We couldn’t  believe it was full to capacity. We headed off to find our 2nd geocache, which was on a county road around the other side of the park. It was near an old grave site:

2 for 2! YAY! It was fun to drive a road we hadn’t been on before and explore a little bit.

It was Mother’s Day and Cold Stone gives away free ice cream to Mothers on Mother’s Day – you can guess what that meant for The Boedies:

I had my usual – a like it Ghiradelli chocolate ice cream with York Peppermint Patty mixed in – OMG it’s sooooo good!

Home for naps and showers, then it was off to dinner with QT. I had this:

Yup – Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps at Pei Wei . . . YUMMY! Did you know that Pei Wei also gives free dinner to Mothers on Mother’s Day? If not, you must have been the only ones who didn’t know because it was PACKED! QT borrowed Princess so she could get her free Mother’s Day meal :-) We were laid back and comfy and having a great time while they profusely apologized over and over about how long it was taking to get our food. No worries! We’ve got nowhere to be! Good food, good friends, and family – it doesn’t get much better than that.

A wonderful way to end a great Mother’s Day!

How about you? What did you do?

It’s Just Paint

I’ve always wanted a yellow bathroom – so when we moved into this house and the master bathroom had yellow paint, I was very happy :-) It wasn’t the exact color of yellow I would have chosen, but it was yellow, so I dealt with it. Almost 7 years later, I want to change it. I decided I’d like some blue color . . . not regular blue . . . but this bluish grey color. So I got some and put it on the wall to see. It was unanimous – YUCK! I like the color, but it’s too dark and the room is too small for that color. I’ve got a HUGE window that lets lots of light in that I love, but I still think it’s too small for that dark color. So I got a lighter blue that would be more like light blue clouds. Better . . . but I wasn’t in love with it. I left it for a few weeks to see if it would grow on me . . . then decided that I probably did still want a yellow bathroom, just the color that I REALLY wanted, not the yucky dull goldish yellow they had chosen for me. So I went and got 3 yellow paint samples.

What did I end up with? Egg yolk, darker egg yolk, and a nicer mellower yellow that I like better than the others, but I’m not in love with any of it. Right now, this is what my wall looks like . . .

I don’t want a paler yellow – I want a bright color that makes me smile in the morning – like the sun :-) My thoughts on the light blue were that it reminds me of water, which I REALLY miss here in CO – not much water around.

I’ve decided it will either be the light blue or the lighter yellow. And I’ll get a fun shower curtain with lots of color, like bright fun drawn flowers or some fun colorful design. I know – it’s a HUGE decision for a room that nobody but me sees . . . and nobody is in there more than 20 minutes a day. Anyone? Buehler? Buehler?

May 2, 2010 – On This Day . . .

. . . Mother Nature gave me the finger.

Ponies Run Wild

You may not know it from reading this little blog, but baseball isn’t the only sport being played by members of our family this spring. The Wild Ponies are back and on the loose, tearing up the soccer field! Keira only gets to be a Wild Pony ever other year. She’s a year older than the rest of the girls on the team, so for one spring and fall season she plays with the Ponies, then the next year she has to move up to the next level and play with another team. Then she plays with the Ponies again. It would be nice to find her a team she could stick with, but it’s just not happening . . . and we’re not ready to give up the Ponies because we love the girls and we love Coach Nick! So for now, she’s a Wild Pony.

I took this team photo after the first game because 1) the whole team was there and 2) they were wearing actual regular soccer uniforms.

“What do you mean they are wearing actual regular soccer uniforms? Of course they are! It’s soccer!”

Why yes, yes it is soccer; however, it is spring soccer on the front range! For most of our spring soccer games, the girls look like what I think kids of the Michelin Man and Stay Puffed Marshmallow would look like.

The girls could really care less. They’re out there running around having fun and actually staying warm. The parents? Not so much. We get to sit on the sidelines in fog thick enough you can wear it – doing nothing but freezing! We wear 15 layers of clothing. We bring hot drinks. We use huge blankets as wind blocks behind our chairs. We use more blankets to cover our fronts. We clap and cheer, all the while wondering WTH we’re doing out here in this weather!

Thought I was kidding when I said the fog was thick enough to wear? Oh I assure you I was not. Here’s the beautiful view of Pikes Peak that we have at all the soccer games that makes them tolerable in the usually windy, chilly, but sunny, weather.

Jealous of my awesome view? I thought so.

The Ponies could care less that we’re freezing our behinds off. They are having a blast out there playing soccer with their buddies! Which is what it’s all about. They could care less that the fog is so wet and thick that it clouds the far end of a soccer field that is 1/3 the size of a regulation field!

The 3rd Pony game was cancelled due to a foot of snow that covered the field last weekend. Not lookin’ too hot for this weekend either – 49, rainy, and windy. Good times. I can’t wait!

Go Ponies!
