Check here to read about our uneventful travel to Maui!

On Tuesday, Dan and I got up early and headed in to Kihei to find St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and meet Father Jack. My Mom had worked so hard for the past year trying to plan a Hawaiian wedding on a limited budget, and she did GREAT! We were so happy with everything. When we got to the church, we were so happy. It was a simple little church, but amazingly beautiful. And since it was the Lent, it was decorated beautifully - we didn’t have to do a thing.

St. Theresa's Church

The meeting went very well. When we’d talked to the church manager on the phone a couple weeks ago prior set up the meeting, we’d asked if we could write our own vows. She said she didn’t think so because Father Jack was very traditional. We were OK with that; so when we got there, we expected to see Father Jack dressed in traditional Catholic Priest Wear. Um, not so. He came out in a white tank top, khaki shorts, and brown Burkenstock sandals. He was SOOOO laid back - it was awesome! We immediately liked him. The only bummer was that they’d had to start doing some rennovations on the library - which is the room where I would normally had gotten ready. But, that wasn’t the end of the world, so we went on our tour of the church and talked about the ceremony. When we told him that Al was going to sing at our wedding, he was very pleased and said Al was awesome and we would love him.

All in all, we left the church very happy. Then we headed to the government office to get our marriage license . . . had to show proof of the blood tests and everything and write down what I wanted my new name to be (it’s got more letters than the alphabet!), and all that jazz.

Off we were to enjoy our last afternoon as fiance’s . . . the weather was beautiful, everyone we were expecting had arrived, and we relaxed and had a nice dinner. Then we were off to our separate condos for the night. Even though we’d lived together for about a 8 months, I stayed with my mom and Dan stayed with his parents.

Check back tomorrow for details on our ceremony!

Rabbits Berries

OMG I’m still laughing!

In the car with Princess . . .

Me: So, did you have fun at your Valentine’s Day party today?
Princess: Totally! We had so much yummy food and we were all so full.
Me: Cool - glad you had fun.
P: And you know what else? You know how Aspen is so small? Well, she had about 6 of those breakfast treats with the rabbits berries inside!
Me: stifling a giggle You mean raspberries?
P: Ya - whatever they’re called - but she loved ‘em!

I would hope that Aspen doesn’t love rabbit berries - but hey, who am I to judge!

12 Years ago today, Dan and I joined my Mom and stepdad, Tony, at the airport in Minneapolis. What were we doing there? We were leaving -35 F temperatures (-60 with the windchill!) and heading to beautiful Hawaii! Yup - Dan and I were getting married on Maui :-) Travelling to Maui takes a long time from MN . . . but man was it worth it! We had a slight layover in LA at their “lovely” airport. Here we are waiting patiently for our plane to leave to head across the ocean:

Us at LAX

We wanted to make sure I had my dress for the wedding - didn’t want it to get lost travelling - so we dragged that dang thing in a dress bag as a carryon. All the cabin attendants were so nice and more than accommodating when we got on the plane - they offered to hang it with the pilot’s jackets so it would be safe. They were wonderful!

It was -35 when we left, but we still wore shorts because by golly, we were headed to Hawaii! That was the February that the entire US had weird really cold weather . . . so when we finally got to Hawaii and balmy 65 degree temps, we had to giggle at the Hawaiians working at the open-air airport . . . they were actually wearing parkas! They thought we were the weird ones in shorts and sweatshirts :-) We hung out at the Honolulu airport for a while waiting for our plane to Maui to leave. When we got on that plane, we were 4 of about 15 people total on the plane. The cabin attendant was so nice and brought us a bottle of champagne. Then he sat down in a regular seat by us and said “Here’s the spiel . . . this is a 15 minute flight. I’m the cabin attendant. This is the emergency door. If this plane goes down, grab on to my coat tails because I guarantee you I’ll be the first one out the door!” HAHAHAHAHA!!!

When we got to Maui, we all headed to the rental car counter to get our two vehicles . . . the slight problem was that they wouldn’t let Dan and I rent our car because neither of us were 25 yet! They wanted a HUGE deposit to let us take it with our name on the rental slip. My mom was MAD . . . and really, when my mom is doing “business” you do not want to cross her. She went off telling them how ridiculous it was that Dan could fly $6 million planes, but they won’t let him rent a pice of *^*& rental car. Then she told them that she was going to drive it and that was that . . . then we walked out the door and she gave us the keys :-) I LOVE my mom!

Off to the condo where we got settled and waited for the others to arrive. All in all we had about 20 people at our wedding . . . some family and some friends . . . what a great excuse to leave MN for a week in frigid February!

Check back tomorrow to hear about our first meeting with Father Jack, the priest who was to marry us :-)

We Boycotted The Super Bowl

The Vikings or Packers weren’t in the Super Bowl, so we headed up to the mountains on Super Bowl Sunday. We figured we’d have a double good chance of a slow day up there - the Super Bowl would take some people and it was Sunday, always slower. The bonus was that it had snowed a couple inches the previous 4 days and was supposed to snow Sunday - so we were all over it!

Turns out the weather could not have been any better . . . it was 25 degrees and slightly overcast with a light flurry. Dude was way happy because he got some new duds!I’m a sucker for a sale, and we got his entire “outfit” for $60 . . . you can’t tell, but his jacket has the same pattern down the sides as his pants. The Pink Power Puff is still gushing about her blue and pink ski’es with butterflies on them :-)

I just had to giggle again - we did a few runs, then rode Four O’Clock To Town so we could take our standard walk to Subway for lunch. The run can get pretty flat in spots, which means Princess and Dude have some trouble because they’re so light. Princess did her air pole and tuck routine again . . . I was in front of her this time, but it was just as cute from the front as it is from behind :-)

breck02

I also took the opportunity on Four O’clock to catch my first baby air! Woo hoo! You MIGHT have been able to fit a credit card between my board and the snow, but I was so excited I actually did it! Baby steps - literally . . . maybe I’ll even try a little jump next time :-)

My kiddos aren’t quite as chicken as I am . . . they went right for the little mogul field after lunch on one of our favorite runs. Hubby even did the moguls on his board! The kids are so funny because the moguls just swallow them up - it’s more like skiing/riding around hills than it is navigating moguls for them.

breck03

At the end of the “bumps” as Princess calls them, there is a little ramp-like jump thingy right behind the lift pole. Princess decided to catch a little air after her second time through the moguls. I missed the air in the pictures, but she certainly got more air than I did!

breck04

Dude decided to try it, too. He caught some air, and his front edge! He did pull this out though and didn’t wipe out :-)

breck05

After we all had a full day of fun trying new runs (oh ya - we added 3 more blue runs to our quest for the blues!), catching or first air, and trying out the moguls, we took Four O’Clock To Town again and walked across the street to check out the ice sculptures. The festival was a couple weeks ago, and it’s been pretty warm so some of the parts had fallen off a couple of them, like a guitar handle, but they were still way cool to look at!

We got back home in the regular 2 1/2 hours, just in time for some warm soup and hot showers before bed. Winter Sundays don’t get much better than that :-)

Got Cookies?

The cookie drop for Girl Scouts was yesterday - so I took an hour off work and headed to the church parking lot where there were 2 large semi-trailers filled to the brim with Girl Scout cookies. I got in line at my appointed time . . . and I ended up being a couple minutes late getting my cookies. Why? Because the lady in front of me had 217 cases to load into her vehicles! OMG! The pictures below . . . my 86 cases in my Highlander.

First, the cargo area. Filled to the brim! I could have gotten maybe 3 more cases in there if I’d taken more time to organize, but the lady THROWING the cases at me and telling me to go faster and “turn only 90 degrees instead of 180 to save time” didn’t really allow time for organization. I did appreciate the help, though!

Next we have the back seat. I had to take Princess’ booster out!

And finally, the front seat. Not packed full, but man, they are not kidding when they say “You have X cases to pick up. You will need the following vehicles to pick up your cases. This means an EMPTY vehicle - no car seats, no animals, no passengers.”

And can I just say that aside from the choice of Tuesday at 9:00 to have the pickup, those Girl Scout ladies know what they are doing! To get 2 full semi-trailers completely unloaded and reloaded into vehicles in less than 90 minutes - DANG!

Hubby is gone, so Dude and Princess enlisted a couple of their friends from across the street to help us bring all the cases into the house after work yesterday. Tonight, the kids and I sorted them all out into the groups for each of the Daisies in my troop.

Surprisingly, I didn’t quite end up with the right amounts of surplus for each kind - ACK! Oh well . . . what can you expect when organizing 1000+ packages of cookies with the help of a 7 and 9 year old :-)

Grounded

So my little Princess has been grounded since Wednesday. She was supposed to be grounded just until the end of today, but yesterday, she earned herself a grounding all the way through Sunday.

What did she do? She lied.  Not a huge lie or anything . . . just a bunch of little lies. We even made it very clear that we knew the answers to our questions and that it would be in her best interest not to lie, but she chose to lie anyway.

So, she’s grounded. Lying is NOT tolerated in t his house. With the grounding, she’s not allowed to have any sweets either - as part of her punishment. When she was told there would be consequences for her lying, she said “I don’t care. You can take away all my Webkinz forever!” Um - WHAT?! So Hubby took away sweets, which might not seem like a big deal, but we have about 2 dozen left over cupcakes sitting on her counter. It’s KILLING her that Dude gets to have a cupcake each day after school and she can’t (he’s only getting them every day to make a point to her).

And today - we had planned to take them to the movie The Tooth Fairy after school because they really have been really good lately - especially this past 10 days while I was playing the role of single mom. Alas . . . no movie for Princess. She gets a babysitter. And to make it sting a bit more - Queen Taunya is joining us at the movie AND I went to Walgreens and bought 4 HUGE boxes of candy for the movie. Ya I know I’m not supposed to take candy into the movie - but that’s not the point here! Stay on task . . .

The candy is sitting on the counter for all to see when they get home from school :-)

Ya - I’m a good mom like that.

I shouldn’t let her go on the Daisy field trip Saturday, but I will. That’s really important to me. Open skating on Saturday with the family is another thing - I see a little Princess sitting in the ice rink without skates on her feet, watching the rest of us skate around with our friends.

Snowboarding on Sunday - she’ll go - that’s not fair to the rest of us to not go because she made bad choices, and there is no way I’m paying a sitter for the entire day! But, she will NOT get to watch movies on the way up there.

Yes - I’m in the running for the MOTY award.

No. You Can’t Ride The Horse

I know you’ll all be terribly jealous when I tell you how I get to spend my Saturday afternoon.

I get to take my 15 Daisy Scouts to my friend’s farm so she can tell them all about horses . . . and somehow tie that into being courageous and strong so the girls can earn their Red Courageous and Strong petal.

We will learn all about feeding and caring and riding and safety and manure and all that fun stuff. The girls will get to hug and pet and love on the horses. The girls will get to feed carrots and bread to the horses. The girls will get to get their shoes muddy without their parents yelling at them.

But they will NOT get to ride the horses . . . it’s against Girl Scout rules for Daisy Scouts to ride horses with the troop on a field trip.

I suspect the following phrase will come out of my mouth approximately 50 times in our 3 hour trip tomorrow:

“No. You can’t ride the horse. No. You can’t ride the horse. Nope. You STILL can’t ride the horse. That’s great that your Grandma’s Uncle’s Cousin’s Daughter’s Best Friend has horses that you’ve ridden before, but you can’t rid the horses here. Nope. Not even if your mom says it’s OK. No. You can’t ride the horse.”

Wish me luck!

Do You Share?

I used to think that I was good at sharing - until I started talking to my friends. Apparently they share much more than I do.

Do you share . . .

a bathroom with our husband? Hell no! The key to a happy marriage is separate bathrooms :-) We have an older home that has a bathroom in the master bedroom, but it’s just a regular bathroom - identical to the main bathroom right outside in the hall. In  our previous house, Hubby got the master bathroom, and I got to share the main bathroom with a potty training boy! Ya - that was fun. This time around, I get the master bathroom, and Hubby shares with the kiddos.

an iTunes library? Ya - not a chance. We like the same music for the most part, but I want to be in CONTROL of my stuff ;-) It also seems that men are incapable of rating their songs. Seriously, that’s one of the coolest features . . . rate the song and get automatic play lists. There is no way Hubby and I would rate songs the same.

a car? Um . . . a little bit. When the Jeep is here, I drive it, because I love my 10 year old Jeep! Maybe it’s because I’m nostalgic . . . it’s the vehicle we bought right before we had Dude. I leave the new Highlander for Hubby to drive. Unless he goes flying - then my beloved Jeep gets parked at the airport for a week at a time, and I weep and pout until I get it back. And speaking of sharing cars, I LOVE to drive . . . road trips get me all excited, so I don’t share the keys to the cars very often at all ;-)

an email address? This one I absolutely do NOT understand! How can you share an email with your husband, or anyone for that matter? That’s my secret way of planning things behind his back ;-) Heck, each of my kiddos have their own email address! They’re not allowed to use it unless we’re sitting there with them, and they’re not allowed to email anyone I haven’t already put in their address book (Mom, Dad, Grandmas, Grandpas, cousins, aunts, uncles, Queens, etc.). I think it’s important that we teach them early that they are in fact entitled to some privacy, but they also need to understand all the crap that is out there on the Internet and learn how to be safe. There’s no keeping the kiddos off the Internet, so we might as well work with ‘em.

I don’t want you to think I don’t like to share at all . . . I am more than happy to share the cooking, laundry, homework, and poop scooping with my Hubby. See, I’m not totally selfish ;-)

Fox Food

It appears as though my little Princess picked out a Princess Cat. Yup - I believe Tonks is a Princess . . . a shy princess, but a princess nonetheless.

I moved her litter box downstairs a few days ago - didn’t want it in Princess’ room. We bought a covered one (to the tune of $25!) so Duma wouldn’t go fishing for snacks. Turns out, Tonks doesn’t like the dark. She’ll go in the litter box, but will only pee right next to the door, and she won’t take the time to cover it up or to cover up her poop. Yesterday, I decided not to have Princess clean the litter box - I wanted to see what Tonks would do.

What would Tonks do? She would choose to pee on the FLOOR next to the litter box rather than walk farther into the dark! The litter box is HUGE, yet she can apparently only pee in it once.

Let me tell you how pissed I was this morning!

And let me tell you how close I was to throwing Ms. Tonks outside as a little snack for the fox!

So am I totally screwed now that she’s pee’d outside the litter box? How do little kitty minds work?

Bass Ackward

Do you know what I get to do tonight? Take Dude shopping for a pair of jeans. Why? Because he’s the only 9 year old on the planet who doesn’t own a pair of jeans. Why? Because they are not camoflauge or black, so he doesn’t like them. So why do we need to buy him a pair? Because his music performance at school is in a couple weeks, and the dress code is not nice pants/shirts/shoes (which he already has from last year). The dress code is blue jeans and a plain t-shirt.

So ya - instead of having to go buy him nice clothes for his performance, I have to go buy him a pair of jeans for this specific occasion.

Seems pretty backwards to me!
