Swim Team

Princess had her first swim team practice last night. Swim team at the Y starts on the first Tuesday of each month. They practice twice a week from 5:40-6:30 p.m. and have a meet with the other YMCAs in town on the 3rd Saturday.

She LOVED it! Her new friend, Nayvee, from volleyball is on the swim team, too, so they had fun together. Basically, they get in the pool and swim - the entire time. The coach says “swim 50 meters back stroke” and they go down and back. Then she gives each of them suggestions on improving their stroke, and they do it again. Then she says “swim 50 meters freestyle” and they do. Lather, rinse, repeat. She did 6 total laps!!! Awesome exercise :-)

Princess is the slowest one by quite a bit, but also the only one who hasn’t been on the team for at least 6 months. She got better each lap with the tips the coach gave her, and with practice, she’ll do just fine. But the best part was that she really liked it, and I like that she’s getting awesome comfy in the water while getting a great workout, too. And, I get to sit in the lobby and watch her through the glass, while reading my Nook - or I can go run the track outside when it’s nice. Win win for everyone.

I’ll try to get some photos of Princess at her first swim meet in her cute orange team swim cap.

Happy swimming!

Heartbreakers

Yup - that’s what Princess’s volleyball team voted for a team name. The one boy on the team, Jeremy, was all for it! Although his first choice would’ve been The Fantasticals :-) I volunteered to coach her team again this past fall. When we signed up, I had the dates wrong! I thought it started and ended one week earlier than it did. I also thought the games would be done by noon each day, like past seasons. Turns out, the games were later than usual, and with the one week difference in schedule, we had quite a few scheduling conflicts. We worked through most of them, sometimes in very creative ways, so we only missed two games. i was lucky to have two parents willing to help out a lot!

It was a lot different coaching 3rd and 4th graders this year than the 1st and 2nd graders last year! We had a blast, and I even got a few of the girls serving overhand by the end of the season. Princess improved a lot over last season, which was fun to see. If you check out this team photo, middle row, you’ll see that Princess wasn’t even the smallest one on the team this year!

I guess this is her year for trying new things since she begged me to sign her up for the swim team after volleyball was over. She took some swimming lessons the past few months and did AWESOME! So now she’s all excited to try swim team, which I’m all for. Stay tuned for more on how 9 year olds actually do a swim team!

280 Pounds

Our awesome Brownie troop smashed last year’s personal best with their donation of 280 pounds of food and toys to Tri-Lakes Cares with this year’s food/toy drive. So proud of them!

Mr. Trumpet Guy

Way back last winter, I was chatting with Dude about 6th grade and middle school in general. I told him that in 6th grade he had to join band . . . he had to do it for at least one year. He could hate it, love it, or just like it, but he had to at least try it for one year. He was insistent that he did NOT want to do band. I’m not sure why, but every time it came up, he said he really didn’t want to. So when it was time to sign up for classes last spring, I let him NOT sign up for band. He thanked me.

3 weeks later, right before the end of school, I got an email from the middle school band teacher. It said . . . “I’m looking at my roster for middle school band for nest year and it doesn’t show Dude on it. He expressed an interest in band. Please let me know when a good time to have him come in for his instrument sample is so he can choose an instrument and get signed up.”

Um - WHAT?!

So I asked Dude about it . . . he says “Yes. I want to do band. I’ve been telling you that all along.”

Ya - what (pause for dramatic effect) EVER!

I got him signed up for an instrument sample, he chose the trumpet, and he signed up for band. After a little chatting and inquiring with him, I discovered his real motivation for wanting to suddenly join the band and play the trumpet. He ultimately wants to be the Bugeler for his Boy Scout troop :-) All righty then!

Anyhoo - it’s now December. He’s been in band for 2 semesters. He practices and I take him to private lessons every Wednesday with a college freshman who lives down the street. HIS goal is to become a music teacher at a high school. He is a beautiful trumpet player and is offering lessons to the kiddos for $8 for 30 minutes. Can’t beat that! It’s amazing how much Dude learns each week at John’s house!

Right before Christmas break, the time came for Dude’s first band concert. He was pretty excited for it, especially the part where he got to where a tuxedo shirt and a bow tie :-) He thought that was pretty cool!

band-01

He was glad to have his buddy Johnny there to help him be not so nervous. Yes - they are the same age. Yes - Johnny’s parents are taller than Dude’s :-)

band-02

He was even more excited about being able to play in the High School auditorium! They were all so cute - and handsome :-)

band-03

He even got to introduce one of the songs they were playing. He didn’t forget the name of the song, but he was quite nervous and did almost forget how to pronounce his own name!

band-04

They did very well; however, our ears may have been a little sore when it was over ;-) After the concert, there was a reception in the lobby. To the parents of Dude’s (and Princess’s) friends, I want you to know how difficult it is to get your kiddos to open their mouths when there is food in there! They all clearly have been taught that’s a rude bad thing to do . . . it takes me a while to convince them a little see-food at the request of a Mom for a photo op is OK :-)

band-05

Two semesters left. Will he continue with band in 7th grade? The trumpet? Who knows. He likes the trumpet, but does not like band, or his teacher. He’s suggested that maybe he doesn’t do middle school band, but keeps taking lessons with John so he can keep playing the trumpet and learning. Then when he gets into high school, he’ll start up band again. He’s heard the high school band teacher is awesome. I guess we’ll see what he signs up for this spring and whether or not the band teacher sends me another email :-)

The Hunt For The Perfect Tree

After we got back from our Turkey Week trip to MN, we took a snowy day and headed up to the forest to cut down our perfect Christmas Tree!!!

…For those of you who are appalled by us going into the forest to cut down a live tree, I offer some information. There are designated tree cutting areas where you can go. They limit the area so you thin the area of the forest that needs it. You can’t cut down a tree with a diameter more than 6″, so you’re helping thing out the smaller trees and make the forest healthier. You have to buy a permit to do it, so the forest service makes a good chunk of money while we help them improve the health of the forest…

We were a little worried about the roads because we’d had a snowstorm earlier in the week, but it turned out not too bad.

We drove around the forest road for a while before we saw these people tying an awesome tree to their roof, so we turned around and parked in their spot after they left. We got all bundled up and headed up the hill on the trek for the perfect tree! It really didn’t take us too long to find our tree. We got to the top of the hill, and when we looked down, we saw this beauty right in the middle of the forest . . . just waiting for us.

01

Do you see it? Our perfect tree? Of course we wanted it and it would fit perfectly in our basement tree spot! So the kiddos hopped on the sled and took off down the hill toward our tree.

02

When they got to the bottom, Hubby asked them to stand next to the tree so we could do our anual measure to make sure it was big enough, but not too tall. Of course, the kiddos were clueless to his ultimate plan :-)

03

Yes - they are under there :-) Good thing Princess was holding on to the sled so she could find her way out!!! We of course had to get our family photo with our perfect tree in the forest before the kiddos chopped it down.

04

Like always, Dude had custody of the saw and took the first shot at the trunk.

06

He eventually surrendered the saw to Princess, but was less than thrilled that he, the Boy Scout, did not get to cut down the entire tree!

07

They finally got the trunk sawed through, knocked the tree over, and loaded it onto the sled for the trek back to the FunRunner. It’s amazing how much smaller the tree looks in the forest next to all those giant trees! Check out how long the tree is compared to the FunRunner.

08

Hubby and Dude did the tree tying, making sure to use new rope instead of old twine . . . they did not want a repeat of last year, when the twine broke and the tree flew off the roof of the Jeep (which I still giggle about uncontrollably when I think of it!). Princess was too short to help, so she stomped around the area, playing with whatever she could find :-)

09

We made a pit stop in Woodland Park for some warm drinks. Turns out, The Donut Mill is right next door to Starbucks! So while I went in and got mochas and peppermint hot chocolates, hubby and the kiddos went next door to get some of the yummiest donuts on the planet. We had an awesome drive home, without the tree flying off the roof at Interstate speeds, which is always a bonus.

Turns out, the tree was a lot taller than we thought. We knew we’d have to cut some of it off to fit into the house, but we didn’t think we’d have to cut 4 feet off! We love our tree, which is wedged between the floor and the ceiling - definitely not going anywhere even if Tonks does decide to go for a climb :-)

Our one bummer for the tree? Dude has gotten even more allergic to the live trees. You would think we would’ve known that before now . . . we did know. But every year it has seemed to get worse. So, sadly, this will be our last live tree :-( Dude didn’t get it - how can we live in the forest with a bazillion trees but he’s allergic to the tree in the house? Well . . . he IS allergic to the trees outside, especially when they polinate in the spring, but his winter allergies really flared up when we put a live tree in the house with all the windows closed and the furnace on blowing the tree stuff right out his bedroom vent.

Hubby and I ended up buying a new prelit artifical tree for next year already. We found a couple that we liked for 50% off, so we went for it :-)

Hoping you all had a wonderful Christmas!

Sleeping Princesses

Princess was very tired when we got home for our Turkey Week trip to MN; however, she had missed her Tonks. She just had to see and love and pet Tonks before bed.

Apparently, nature took over and made her actually sleep while allowing her to pet and love Tonks at the same time :-)

Wow! This is the first time I’ll eat lunch at school with braces!

This is the first time I’ll go cut down a Christmas Tree with braces!

This is the first time I’ll go snowboarding with braces!

This is the first time I’ll jump on the trampoline with braces!

This is the first time I’ll decorate the Christmas Tree with braces!

This is the first time I’ll sleep with braces!

This is the first time I’ll pet Duma with braces!

This is the first time I’ll ride in the FunRunner with braces!

This is the first time I’ll blink my eyes . . . brush my teeth . . . walk . . . think . . . with braces!

It’s amazing how many “firsts” an 11 year old can have :-)

Metal Mouth

It finally happened . . . my Dude got braces. We went for his consultation on Friday the 18th after school, and he got his braces Monday the 28th before he went to school. When we left his consultation on the 18th, he said “Wow. I left school without braces, and when I go back, I’ll have braces! That’s weird.” He was actually kinda bummed I think that he wouldn’t have the chance to tell any of his friends he was getting braces because we were leaving for MN for Turkey Week!

Here’s my Dude pre-braces - as handsome as ever :-)

Here’s my Dude with braces - still smiling and still as handsome as ever :-)

So far, no significant pain - just a little dull annoying pain in the teeth. The worst pain was mental, when he read the “Do Not Eat” list, which included popcorn and gummy candy!!! I’m sure he’ll survive the next 18 months, but it’s gonna be tough since we just got a bunch of Boy Scout popcorn :-)

$55

I’m pretty sure all of us would jump at the opportunity to save $55 on something. Last week I tried to do just that.

I had purchased QuickBooks Pro 2012 for our home business at Sam’s Club a couple weeks ago. It was about $174 before tax. I didn’t get around to installing it, and was happy about that when I got an email from Sam’s Club with an ad for $55 instant savings on QuickBooks Pro 2012! The next day, I grabbed my receipt and my unopened box of software and headed to Sam’s to get my $55 :-) The lady at the counter was really nice . . . she tried to refund the amount. That didn’t work. So she decided to return the box and just ring it up again at the discounted price, but when she rung it up, it came up with the regular price. She asked how I knew about the sale. I told her I got an email from Sam’s Club about it.

She looked at me weird and said “Did the email come FROM Sam’s Club or someone else?” Um, I just said it came from Sam’s Club. “It came from Sam’s Club.” I could tell she didn’t believe me . . . so I yanked my trusty smartphone out of my purse and found the email to show her.

Hmmmm . . . very interesting she says. So she tries to scan the box again. Amazingly, in 5 minutes time, the price in their system hadn’t changed. She determined it must be an online only deal.

I was quite done at this point, so I decided to just let it go. Can I have my money back so I can buy this online and save me some moolah? Sure - I get my money back.

I go home, get online, and order the software with the $55 discount. At checkout I laughed out loud when I saw my option for free in-store pickup. Seriously? I have to order it online to get the discount, but then I can go to the store to pick it up almost immediately instead of paying for shipping and waiting for it?

Had I known that, I would’ve stood in the lobby and ordered it on my phone, walked back to the counter for my pickup and been on my way!

I order, I set to pick up at the same store the next morning. So I end up driving back into town to pick up what was probably the exact same box I’d returned the day before! At least I had to be in town anyway so I didn’t waste any gas . . . but still? Did it really have to be that difficult?

Spelling Tests …

. . . are a great time to brown nose the teacher!
